USING GERUNDS AS SUBJECTS, AND IT + INFINITIVE

(Dùng gerunds là chủ ngữ, và it + to verb)

INFINITIVE OF PURPOSE: IN ORDER TO

(infinitive chỉ mục đính với in order to)

I. Gerunds as subjects, and it + infinitive

Gerunds (V-ing) thường được sử dụng là chủ ngữ của câu

Driving with a drunk man is dangerous.

(lái xe với một gã say xỉn thì nguy hiểm lắm.)

Studying English is not difficult.

(Học tiếng Anh đâu có khó.)

Thỉnh thoảng chúng ta cũng có thể sử dụng infinitve (to+verb) làm chủ ngữ, nhưng infinitive thường được dùng với it hơn

To drive with a drunk man is dangerous.

= It is dangerous to drive with a drunk man. (thường được dùng)

It is not difficult to study English.

II. Infinitive of purpose: in order to

In order to được dùng để diễn tả mục đích, và để trả lời cho câu hỏi ‘why?’

In order to thường được viết tắt là to

Why did they come here?

They came here in order to see you.

They came here to see you.

(Họ đã đến đây là để gặp anh đó.)

Không dùng for để diễn tả mục đích với một động từ, mà phải dùng noun (danh từ)

They came here for seeing you. (see = verb)

They came here for you. (you = noun)

She went to supermarket for buying fruits.

She went to supermarket for fruits.

She went to supermarket to buy fruits.

(Cô ta đi siêu thị để mua trái cây.)

* Exception:

be used for V-ing = diễn tả mục đích tổng quát của một thứ gì đó

be used to infinitive = diễn tả mục đích nhất định của một thứ nhất định (dùng riêng cho một mục đích khác)

Scissors are used for cutting paper.

(Kéo được dùng để cắt giấy. – mục đích tổng quát chung của kéo.)

These big scissors are used to cut meat.

These big scissors are used for cutting meat.

(Cái kéo bự này được dùng để cắt thịt. – Một cái kéo nhất định được sử dụng chỉ cho một mục đích nhất định.)
