Tính từ – so sánh bằng và những từ bổ trợ so sánh

TÍNH TỪ – SO SÁNH BẰNG VÀ NHỮNG TỪ BỔ TRỢ SO SÁNH (comparing and contrasting)

  1. So sánh bằng hoặc không bằng

Khi chúng ta muốn so sánh 2 thứ mà bằng hay không bằng nhau, giống nhau, hoặc khác nhau thì chúng ta sẽ dùng các cấu trúc sau

1.1 (not) as + adj + as

He is taller than me. =  I am not as tall as him. (as he is)

Anh ta cao hơn tôi.  = Tôi không cao bằng anh ta.

He is as good at Maths as I am. (as me.)

(Anh ta cũng giỏi toán bằng tôi.)

Peter is as tall as Bob.

(Peter cũng cao bằng Bob.)

1.2 Different from + noun (danh từ)

She is different from her husband. (= They are different.)

(Cô ta khác biệt so với chồng cô ấy.)

This house is different from that one.

(Cái nhà này khác với cái nhà kia.)

1.3 Similar to + noun

His food is similar to mine. (= Our food is similar.)

(Đồ ăn của anh ta cũng giống của tôi.)

That car is similar to this one. (= they are similar.)

(Cái xe hơi kia cũng giống cái xe này.)

1.4 The same (+noun) as + noun

I am the same age as her. (= Our ages are the same.)

(Tôi cùng tuổi với cô ta.)

My car is the same as hers. (= Our cars are the same.)

(Xe hơi của tôi cũng giống như xe của cô ta.)

  1. Những từ bổ trợ khi dùng so sánh

2.1. Khi chúng ta muốn nói đến sự khác biết lớn khi so sánh, thì chúng ta thêm ‘much’, ‘a lot’, hay ‘far’ trước tính từ dùng để so sánh

He is much taller than me.

(Anh ta cao hơn tôi nhiều.)

She is a lot better at Maths than him.

(Cô ta giỏi toán hơn anh ta nhiều.)

This smart phone is far more expensive than that one.

(Cái điện thoại thông minh này mắc hơn cái kia nhiều.)

2.2. Khi chúng ta muốn nói đến sự khác biệt không nhiều khi so sánh, thì chúng ta thêm ‘slightly’, ‘a little’, ‘a bit’, hay ‘not much’

He is slightly taller than me.

(Anh ta cao hơn tôi tí xíu.)

She is a little better at Maths than him.

(Cô ta giỏi toán hơn anh ta một chút.)

She is a bit older than me.

(Cô ta già hơn tôi một chút.)

This house is not much more expensive than that one.

(Cái nhà này cũng chẳng mắc hơn cái kia bao nhiêu.)

2.3. Khi chúng ta muốn nói đến không có hay hầu như không có sự khác biệt nào khi so sánh, thì chúng ta thêm ‘exactly’, ‘more or less’, hay ‘roughly’

His age is exactly the same as mine.

(Tuổi của anh ta thì bằng chính xác tuổi của tôi.)

My car is more and less the same as hers.

(Xe của tôi hầu như giống với cái xe của cô ta.)

He is roughly as tall as me.

(Anh ta cũng cao xấp xỉ tôi.)

2.4. Khi chúng ta muốn nói đến sự khác biệt gấp bao nhiêu lần khi so sánh, thì chúng ta thêm ‘half’, ‘one and a half times’, ‘twice = two times’, ‘three times’, v.v…

She is half as rich as I am.

(Cô ta giàu bằng nửa tôi.)

She is one and a half times as rich as I am.

(Cô ta giàu gấp 1.5 lần tôi.)

His mistress is twice as young as his wife.

(Nhân tình của anh ta trẻ gấp đôi vợ anh ta.)

I am three times bigger than he is. (than him.)

(Tôi bự con hơn anh ta gấp 3 lần.)

Exercise of comparing and contrasting

I. Underline correct phrases: “the same as”, “ similar to”, or “ different from”.

            (hãy gạch dưới những cụm từ đúng )

  1. Ted  wears a red baseball cap. I also wear a red baseball red. Ted’s cap is (the same as/ different from) mine.
  2. Mr. Hope wears a cowboy hat. Mr. Black wears a panama hat. Mr. Hope’s hat is ( the same as/ different form) Mr. Black’s.
  3. Fiona rides a red Honda motorbike. Emma rides a yellow Suzuki motorbike. Fiona’s motorbike is (the same as/ different from)     Emma’s.
  4. Steve has a white bike. Mark also has a white bike. Steve’s bike is (the same as/ different from) Mark’s.
  5. Mai has a Casio calculator. I have a Sharp calculator. Mai’s calculator is (the same as/ different from) mine.
  6. I want to buy a vest (similar to, different from) my mom’s. I think, the color would also fit me.
  7. The house is completely (similar to, different from) what we saw in the picture. Are we lost?
  8. I don’t like this sushi. The taste is (similar to, different from) I ate last week.
  9. Mary has a twin sister. She always puts on clothes (similar to, different from) her sister making their mom always confused.
  10. Her voice sounds (similar to, different from) a bird singing in the morning. It’s calming.

II. Rewrite each of the following sentences, keeping the meaning of the sentence, but using one of the phrases (not) as…as, similar to, different from or the same as, as appropriate.

(Hãy viết lại các câu sau sao cho nghĩa không đổi bằng cách sử dụng những cụm từ thích hợp: (not) as…as, similar to, different to, hoặc the same as)

For example:

(1) My essay and your essay are similar.
My essay is similar to your essay.

(2) Your watch is better than mine.

            My watch is not as good as than yours.

  1. My sandals and his sandals look similar.
  2. This book and that book are different.
  3. HCM City is more crowded than Hanoi.
  4. They live in a bigger house than ours.
  5. The child’s height and the height of the table are the same.
  6. This story and that story seem similar.
  7. This magazine is more interesting than that one.
  8. The date of the concert and the date of the play are the same.
  9. The climate in the South is hotter than that in the North.
  10. My new shoes are more comfortable than my old ones.
  11. The view from the window and the view from the door are different.
  12. The Mekong River is longer than the Saigon River.
  13. My sister and my cousin look similar.
  14. Chinese is more difficult than English.
  15. Your schoolbag is heavier than mine.
